ABCD Diabetes Update 2024

We invite all course participants to submit a case abstract. If selected for the Diabetes Update 2024, an oral presentation of the case will take place in a related workshop during the meeting.

The main aim of each workshop is to discuss cases you routinely encounter in your diabetes clinics. All delegates are encouraged to submit an abstract of a routine clinical case that will be of interest to the topics described below. We are not looking for unusual cases, simply what you would see day-to-day in your clinic. Delegates who have their abstract selected will receive a £25 discount on the course registration fee. This will be administered as a refund after the event, provided that the full event is attended.

Workshops will commence with a short presentation from a facilitator, which will introduce the session topic. This will be followed by two 5-minute case presentations from delegates, which will be discussed in detail with support from the facilitators. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and seek advice.

Topics for 2024

All cases submitted must be directly relevant to one of the topics listed below.

• Management of diabetes during acute illness or surgery
• Conception and pregnancy in diabetes
• Neuropathy in diabetes
• Interpretation of CGM: cases of hyper- and hypoglycaemia management in diabetes
• Eating disorders and diabetes
• Lipid disease in diabetes 
• Newly diagnosed diabetes - classification and management
• Diabetes in elderly / frail people and end of life

Word limit for cases is 400 words.

We will endeavour to inform all authors as to whether or not your abstract has been selected for presentation within 4 weeks of the closing date.

Please note that you are expected to attend all sessions on each day of the programme and we cannot accept requests to attend part of the course only. 

Cost

The fee for the course is £320 per delegate for ABCD members and £470 for non-members, including refreshments and lunch on days one, two and three, and dinner with drinks on day one (optional). Please note that drinks with lunch (apart from water, tea and coffee) are at your own expense. 

You will need to pay for your own travel expenses, accommodation, breakfast, dinner on day two and any room extras at your hotel.

Accommodation

You must book and pay for your accommodation for two nights - 31st January and 1st February 2024. The closest accommodation is at the The Link Hotel and Burleigh Court Hotel, which are located a short walk from Holywell Park Conference Centre. Otherwise you can choose from a selection of hotels in the Loughborough area..

Dinner 

All delegates and faculty are invited to the meeting dinner at the Burleigh Court Hotel on 31st January. The cost of the dinner is £35, including drinks. If you wish to attend the dinner, please ensure that you select the rate including dinner when you register for the course. Please note that places at the dinner are limited and are available on a first-come first-served basis. We will endeavour to cater for any dietary requirements that we are notified of prior to the course.

Venue

Holywell Park Conference Centre, Holywell Way, Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park, Loughborough, LE11 3GR. Please see the venue website and useful information about your stay for further information.

Travel

Located in Loughborough in the heart of England, the venue is one mile from Junction 23 on the M1, 7 miles from East Midlands Airport and 90 minutes from London St. Pancras. There is a substantial amount of complementary secure car parking next to the venue, with over 1000 spaces available for vehicles.

Loughborough Rail station is 3 miles from the venue and can be reached by cab in 10 minutes or shuttle bus in 20 minutes. You can buy a combined ticket that incorporates the bus journey to and from the railway station. Select the Loughborough University Bus (XLO) when booking on websites such as East Midlands Trains and The Trainline.

East Midlands Airport is located 7 miles from the venue, and a taxi from the airport costs approximately £15 and the journey takes less than 15 minutes. There is also a regular bus service that runs regularly from East Midlands Airport to Loughborough.

All meeting rooms are located in the Holywell Park Conference Centre, except for the Conference Dinner, which will be held at the Burleigh Court Hotel on the University campus, a short walk from Holywell Park.

Accreditation

Accreditation for this meeting has been granted by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom for 16 category 1 (external) CPD credits for full attendance.  Certificates of attendance will be available to download from your dashboard after the event. 

Safety and security

Please do not leave bags or equipment unattended and please wear your badge at all times. ABCD cannot be held responsible for personal belongings or effects.

Cancellation

Should you need to cancel your place at this meeting, please note that fees paid can only be refunded if we are able to fill your place, otherwise no refunds can be given. All refunds are subject to a £10 administration fee.

7. All delegates attending events must comply with relevant current government guidance at the time of the event. Delegates are asked to take all possible precautions against spreading infection through the wearing of masks and frequent hand washing. Delegates are asked to advise the event team if they test positive for COVID-19.
